Food is excellent. Mark prepares a team meal for the Buffalo Grove football team every Friday too. Love the pink sauce.

We love this place. We eat in. We bring home from Buffalo Grove to Highland Park (still hot and delicious!). The variety of pastas and what you can add make this a really customized meal, and always delicious. The sandwiches are also good - as is the garlic bread. It looks like a fast food place, but you eat it like a fine Italian restaurant.

I think I have found my other go to place for a quick dinner. I tried their pesto and I also tried their pink pasta sauce. Both were super delicious. I also had the I spaghetti and meat balls. Everything they make is fresh and ingredients are bought that day. That's what my co-worker told me. It's a family owned restaurant. The owner is a very nice personable man. I will be coming here more often than more.

One of mine and my family's favorites! (In fact, I rarely made pasta dishes much after discovering this place. They just did it so much better!!) Eat in (smaller eating area - but still plenty roomy) or Carry out. The dishes are delicious and the prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. All of the dishes are customizable. For lunch or dinner....YUM! The owner also does occasional lunches for the kids in the area schools (the ALL eat hot lunch on a Pastabilities day!!), and he is known to work with groups in the community and charities. THAT matters!

So everyone raves about this place but I didn't think it was amazing. Spinach ravioli is pretty good could be better if it was spicier , the only have red pepper flakes as an option. Also their bread is horrible, it was hard as a rock. The service was good though.

Never really been into Italian food but this by far definitely has to be one of the only places I wouldn't mind going back to over and over again! You can make your own pasta and choose whatever toppings or pick from the selections. Their "pink sauce" is amazing which is a marinara and Alfredo mixed sauce. My personal favorite is bow-tie pasta with pesto sauce, mushrooms, chicken, and spinach. Their garlic bread is hands down thee best I have ever had!! They give you a good amount of food along with bread. A bit pricey if you add toppings but nonetheless definitely worth it!

  • Linh L.

The food is decent. I can make better pasta and I don't cook unhealthy meals... I know how to use spices and flavors. This place is just so-so to me.

    (2)
  • Gianna S.

Tried this place last night and now it's definitely one of my favorites!! I had the spinach tortellini with mushrooms, mozzarella and chicken drenched in "pink sauce" which is a mix of Alfredo sauce and marinara (which was delicious)! Their garlic bread was also great! If you are in the area and are craving some delicious pasta definitely give them a try!

This place is amazing. The sauces are fresh. The options are endless. My kids love it because they have toys behind the counter and the prices are super reasonable. Sometimes the bread can be a little tough and the owner can come off crabby but he is a nice guy. The cashiers are also super sweet and helpful when you do not know what to get. One suggested I mix the pesto and Alfredo sauces. OMG it is soooo amazing!!! Super rich but very tasty and a nice change from their usual.

I work nearby so I have had Pastabilities for lunch on a number of occasions. It is always delicious pasta, whether I make the combo myself or getting their lasagna or ravioli and adding meat sauce. Cannot speak to health benefits of pasta. But if you want tasty pasta (different types) and sauce this is a great place.

My husband and I used to go to Pastabilities more than 10 years ago. Then we moved away, but we came back to the area about two years ago. I'm gluten free now and I was thrilled to find out that they offer gluten free pasta. I'm often hesitant to eat out being gluten free. I was especially concerned being that wheat pasta is high in gluten and if they made a mistake, I would be suffering for hours. However, I'm happy to report that I have eaten at Pastabilities several times over the past 18 months and I've never had even as much as a twinge of stomach cramps. They do it right. I order either the pesto pasta with broccoli or the red sauce with meat and broccoli. The sauces are really fantastic. Sometimes I've needed a little extra sauce to finish off my pasta. I've gone up to the counter to get more and they have given me a nice sized cup of sauce without charge. Lovely "mom and pop" operation. Super kid-friendly, too!

Great food, outstanding value. I've been going to pastabilities for years and tried something new for the first time. #87 was possibly the best pasta dish I have ever eaten. Angel hair, meat sauce, mushrooms, roasted red peppers and hot peppers.

I've lived in Buffalo Grove for the past seven years, and I've never gone into Pastabilities. Frankly the decor leaves a lot to be desired and maybe that's why I've never ventured in. However, looking for a quick meal last night, I decided to give them a try for carryout. I ordered a gluten-free pasta with oil and garlic and added chicken, an eggplant parmesan, and a kid's ravioli with pesto. For a place called Pastabilities, I was expecting better quality pasta and sauces. The gluten-free pasta is now changed to rigatoni instead of spaghetti (which was fine), but the texture was just okay and it had virtually no flavor. We had to basically drown the pasta with cheese to make it edible. It was a similar experience with the kid's ravioli. It was several dollars to upgrade to the pesto sauce, and I've had better pesto purchased from Sam's Club in a jar. Wait - so why am I giving a 4-star rating if everything was meh? The eggplant parmesan. It's REALLY good. It's not cheap at $8.99 which comes basically a la carte other than with a piece of french bread. But it's not just a piece of eggplant with sauce. They make it into a layered casserole masterpiece with plenty of cheese and sauce. Texture is spot on, flavor is great, everything about this dish is perfect. There's also no breadcrumbs for those looking to do low-carb or gluten-free. I think this place is somewhere between 2-3 stars for pasta alone. But then they get 4-5 stars for the eggplant parmesan. We'll average out to a 4 star overall.

Yelp you've helped me out again this place is as good as advertised. The gnocchi in pink sauce spicy is outstanding.

  • Rekha 'Kristy' V.

Great place for pasta and sandwiches! You can mix and match until you find the perfect combo of pasta! The food is great and the service is better!

  • Misti M.

Great!! In town from NC and wanted a delicious meal...exactly what I got!! I had the spinach tortellini with pink sauce, and mushrooms and I added chicken and mozzarella cheese!!! YUMM

This fast food Italian joint nails the sauces. Garlic and oil is well done, and marana and meat sauces are home made, with a fresh tomatoey zest. Try adding some hot peppers to make it hot n spicy for a small upcharge. Meatballs are tender and big enough to fill you up and the chicken parm is on point. Each meal comes with some Italian bread on the side and comes in at 6-8$ a fair price. Service is quick as well. On a sour note, pastabilities has shrunk their portions as of recent times to keep up with food costs. You get less noodles and less veggies in your pasta. Rather than shrink portions, they should cut out the bread. Carbs on carbs? Still, the prices are just fine for the quality of the sauces and meats. I love eating Italian without the sit down table service and its not corporate so you want these folks to do well. I will be back soon!

This place is kind of hidden in the strip mall, but the food here is always great! I usually order for pick up, and the food is always ready by the time I get there. I really like their Chicken Parmesan Panini. Their meatballs are also great. I have never had a meal from here that I didn't enjoy. It is as close as you can get to Italian fast food, but still getting quality food. Their website also has coupons, so make sure to print them out and take them with you.

  • Tasty X.

My favorite place for pasta. Forget your Olive Gardens and other Italian places. This place has them beat. 5 STARS easily given. You can customize your pasta all you want here. But you owe it to yourself to try their basic meat sauce and meatballs. DELICIOUS. I used to eat here every week when I worked close by. Never once did I get remotely sick of it.

Like a previous reviewer, I too was very happy to find this place after moving to BG. It's got super-tasty quick Italian food. A local "fast-food" Italian place, if you will. Personal fave: bowtie pasta with the Marfredo sauce (Alfredo/Marinara mix) with sausage cut into it. *MUAH*. I actually occasionally crave this dish. And the super cool thing is that I can call ahead, and it's ready in 10 minutes! I think their food is quite tasty. The only think I've come across that I didn't care for is the "generic" pasta..which is pretty boring in my opinion - for example the pasta that comes with the chicken parmesan. The chicken is really good, but for that price I want both the chicken and the pasta to be equally mouthwatering. Overall - a really great option for GOOD "fast-food". Pros: Great food Cons: a little pricey for what it is,

Used them today for a corporate event - everyone LOVED it and the service was incredible. I would recommend to anyone. The chicken parmesan was delicious.

My favorite place to eat. I come here 1-2 times per week on my lunch break and have never been disappointed. All of the food is DELICIOUS and the people here are friendly and always greet me by name. Mark is an excellent manager. The pasta is always cooked to perfection which is hard to find, even in fancy Italian restaurants. I'm particular about it not being overcooked and I have never had that problem here (and I've been coming for 5+ years). I usually get the gnocchi with marfredo sauce or the mostaccoili with meat sauce and mozzerella. I've also tried the fettucini alfredo, homemade lasagna, and italian sub and ALL have been fantastic. Good prices (though they do go up every so often), tasty bread, and great portion sizes. I will be back, probably tomorrow. :)

  • Dan K.

This is definitely the place for custom made pasta. Custom as in you can choose what pasta you want and what sauce you want and what toppings you want! Also, need to point out that the map on Yelp is incorrect. Pastabilities is located in the plaza on the corner of Lake Cook and McHenry in the same plaza as the Jewel Osco!

    (5)
  • Craig S.

This is a small storefront restaurant that makes a big difference. What they do is pasta. How they do it is GREAT! You go in and pick your pasta, then your sauce, then your toppings. That simple. The taste of the food is anything but simple. The sauces are well seasoned, the pasta is firm and the toppings delicious. Stop in for a great Italian treat!! Although they have a few tables, this place is designed mostly for takeout. The only complaint that I have is that their "garlic bread" is just plain (and hard) artisan loaf with no anything...only comes with a side of plain butter.

  • Bob B.

The pictures on Yelp are accurate, the average entree price is around $7.99, portions are a good size, and it's very tasty. They are quick turning around your food in under 5 minutes. On top of that, they use real dishes and forks/knives for a fast food restaurant. When you leave, they will come to the table for you and remove your dishes. I was extremely surprised that they have an extensive low-carb menu for dieters. I took 3 of my co-workers there on a Tuesday.... we came back there on Friday (a few days later) because we like it. Look for coupons on their website.

My Niece and I asked my sister to take us to some place new today. She decided to take us here for dinner; a place she hadn't been to since moving away from the area. I'm so glad she remembered... it turned out to be a treat for all of us! My Niece ordered the Mostaccioli w/o sauce and extra bread. My sister ordered the Mostaccioli w/marinara sauce and bread. I ordered the Meatball sandwich w/friench fries and immediately wished I had more time to look over the menu. I feel like I missed the opportunity to eat healthier Italian food by going conservative. The portions are really good for the price, fast and friendly service. The busperson is quick to pick up after you. My Sister left him a $3 tip for her appreciation of his great service.

Ordered last night and pasta was delicious! Had Saranello's pasta the night before and this was by far so much better! Love the gluten free choices for my daughter. We will definitely be back!!!

  • Darci S.

We are hooked on the cheese lasagna! It is so good, huge portion, great value. Every dish comes with a side of hot, tasty bread and butter. The chicken parm is good as well although I agree with other reviewers that the spaghetti with it is just average. They have tons of create your own options, will have to try that some time if I can tear myself away from the delicious lasagna! The kids meals are big and reasonably priced, comes with a drink and they also gave our son a prize from under the counter. Really nice people, too.

Excellent! I've been coming here for about 20 years and love the Spaghetti with meat sauce. The service and food are consistently awesome!

Just had Pastabilites for the first time after a friend told me their chicken parmesan sandwich was top notch. He was right! Not an unhealthy amount of food, comes with a nice sized side (pasta salad for me) and the bread is delicious. I like the menu as I'm a big sandwich fan. They also offer a low carb menu that my wife will totally dig. I'd say to give it a whirl. Very affordable for what you get. I was impressed.

  • Joseph L.

For a "fast food" Italian spot this place does not disappoint. Not sure the eggplant parm is the worlds best as they claim but it wasn't half bad either. Love the fact you can create virtually any pasta dish you want and get it minutes later.

My absolute favorite place for pasta!! I remember this place being the first place I went to when I moved here about 9 years ago and I've always made sure to come back to it since. Every person I have taken here always begs me to take them back because of how good their food is and how reasonable their prices are. The pictures on the wall do not do the food justice. My fiancé and I ordered the caprese salad and mosstacholi with marfredo sauce (one had chicken, the other shrimp). We had no idea how big the caprese salad was and how large the pasta portions were, not to mention the amount of bread they give you. Everything was hot and fresh. Every time we are in the area, we always make sure to stop in and eat. We have never been disappointed with the service and the food. I highly recommend this place to everyone!!

  • T N.

The service was friendly and the sauce was delicious. I recommend the "Garlic and Oil" for a lighter feeling meal. The pasta didn't seem all that fresh or unique for supposedly being "home made." Too bad, too, because I love fresh pasta!!!

    (4)
  • Vicky C.

I think people are so generous cuz its considered a fast food place. It's a little bit better than frozen pasta from the market. I had bow tie pasta w pink sauce and mushrooms, spinach as toppings (came w little bit of onion). Came out to a little bit over eight dollars. Wouldnt go there again... u can get lunch specials at other pasta places for this price.

This is a regular stop for lunch on Mondays in Buffalo Grove with the work gang. The owner is their 99% of the time and is great. The place is a great find for a quick casual Italian meal. The menu is quite extensive with many pasta dishes ready to order or you may make up your own dish. Also great sandwiches like Chicken Pannini, Chicken Parm, Subs with awesome quality meats. Every day there is a different Special at lunchtime to keep things fresh for you and always reasonably priced. Highly recommend and great on your taste buds and wallet!

  • Scott B.

Stopped in here, very hungry, low on cash, in the same strip-mall, and with the high Yelp ratings. Boy oh boy were the Yelpers right. Fantastic food (soup and Pasta) and great prices. This is a no-frills place, and you can have your pasta however you like it. You pick everything that hits the plate, and I especially liked that they had a whole wheat pasta option (linguini only). The only reason this is not 5-stars in my book is because of the plain-Jane nature of the restaurant itself, but then again, that's part of how they keep their prices low. Great place. I'll be back!

I was really upset years ago when the Vernon Hills location shut down. I found this location and it's just as amazing. The bread is great and pretty much any dish you get there is top notch yummy. You'll walk away satisfied, with some for left overs and a big smile on your face.... guaranteed!

  • Lauren B.

Pastabilities IS AMAZING! I grew up in this area and Pastabilities was huge part of my childhood / teenage years. They have been at this location for as long as I can remember. Mark the owner is super friendly and passionate about this place. I love love love the spinach tortellini with pesto. Mixing the pesto with the alfredo sauce is really good too. Honestly I always have a hard time choosing what to get once I've been away because it's all SO good. The meatball sandwich on the garlic bread is killer and really good for lunch with a side of pasta. Oh and the chicken salad in the summer is the best I've ever had. It's really fast and reasonably priced. Good food, family owned and local. I miss it just writing this review.

For what it is, a place for fast Italian food, Mama Jojo's Pastabilities is a winner. Food comes out hot and fresh every time and it is fun to mess around with your toppings, sauces (try the marfredo, marinara's creamy cousin) and of course, pastas. Maybe spaghetti, meatballs and meat sauce with a side of Italian sausage. Or angel hair with shrimp, marinara and hot giardiniera. Mix and match or go for one of the many documented combinations pictured on the walls. The bread is nice and crusty. The lasagna is always delicious too and the chicken parmesan is super-satisfying. I always feel good after a meal here. Maybe I'll go there for lunch tomorrow.

Great food that's actually homemade at great prices. It's literally addicting the quality is so good. Finding a place with awesome service and a great product is rare. This is defiantly one of the best places to eat.

Okay if you are in the suburbs and you want a quick meal this might be the place for you. It's cheap and good what's not like about that? Great for the kids and on the go.

  • Stacy S.

Yum! I have been here a handful of times during my lunch break, and it is great! I am the type to usually find a favorite dish and get it forever, but I have tried many of Pastabilities options. The "pink sauce" a mix of marinara and alfredo is very good. They are also GREAT for groups (my office has brought more than 20 people at a time and they always accommodate). There seem to be some great lunch specials too, and free bread with my meal is always a plus!

  • Brij V.

We've lived in Buffalo Grove for almost 5 months and we just happened to give this place a shot recently and we were pleasantly surprised! Eggplant Parmesan & lasagna were amazing!! Tomato sauce was delicious....all at a very reasonable price! Can't believe i didn't try this place out sooner! Will be back for more!

This is my favorite restaurant on the planet. I know that every time I go there, there will be a quality, reasonably priced, italian dinner. The staff is always courteous and friendly and the food is ready in minutes after I call in my order.

  • catherine m.

every time i go there, i feel so welcomed by cordial staff and owner, mark. the food is fresh, warm, 'and just the way i like it', as if mama had made it herself. pre-orders are welcomed, too, in case you have a tight time frame. i am hooked on pastabilities, no. 91, to be exact.

Good food, good value. Chicken parm's a winner

  • Tony W.

Fast, friendly and reasonable pasta, salads or sandwiches. I would give this 3.5 stars if I could. Gets busy at lunch, sometimes you have to wait out a few slowpokes. I like their sandwiches, like grilled Chicken on foccacia or italian beef as they come with a side (such as a side of pasta). Not too many quick pasta places, and this is pretty decent.

    (3)
  • Roy A.

Another good lunch place in this vicinity. The sauces are all real good from garlic and oil to marfredo to regular marinara and alfredo. The pastas are all tasty and the couple times I've had a sandwich it wasn't too shabby either. Great spot for a quick lunch but tends to get real crowded at that time too.

    (4)
  • Alan R.

Fast casual, local restauarant specializing in (obviously) pasta, salads and sandwiches. A great location for kids. Your order is taken at the counter. There is a menu posted above the counter and a more in depth paper one on the counter. The basic idea is you pick a pasta and sauce. Options of adding chicken or shrimp also abound. Its a great place for children and for a quick meal.

To think it almost didn't happen. I had read numerous extremely favorable reviews on Pastabilities but when I pulled into the shopping plaza and saw it was a vanilla looking store front eatery I had serious doubts about all those reviews. I almost turned around. Wow! What a find. Best in class! This is my first review ever... mainly because the quality was off the charts so I feel compelled to share this culinary experience with others so they can enjoy this gem. The minestrone soup was made from scratch and was delicious and generous in serving size. I also had the mostaccioli with red sauce and meatballs. It was to die for! If you love Italian food they will make your favorite dish just the way you want it! Definitely will be returning. Enjoy!

I saw the reviews on Yelp and brought my extended family here. "Real fine dining," my cousin joked when we walked in. This place has the aesthetic appeal of a Subway sandwich place. I chastised myself for forgetting that you can't trust Yelp reviews of strangers who might have very different standards for "4 stars". How embarrassing. This side of my family is more accustomed to eating at places with... y'know... tablecloths and a wine list. They're good sports though. After we ate,y cousin apologized for giving me a hard time. "That was really good!" She said. I'm fact, everyone agreed that the food was all really good. My diavola ("hot and spicy pink sauce") was better than most of the fancy places I'd been in Highland Park. My wife's eggplant parmesan was fantastic - light, crispy, flavorful, not oily. The minestrone soup was good too. It was also quiet so we could all hear each other. They also have gluten free pasta which is nice for some folks in my family.

  • Gregory B.

Boy, were we surprised when we walked in this place. Formica tables and ordering at the counter. The food was another matter. Quite good, made with great care and attention to detail. We had eggplant and chicken parmesan. Both were just about as good as we have experienced. Lovely marinara. Nice pasta. The grilled chicken was perfecto. The bow tie pasta with chicken, mushrooms and parmesan was amazing. The only weak spot was the minestrone. Fresh as could be, but lacking herbs and distinction. Prices cannot be beat. These people are nice!

Super friendly service and amazing choices!! Comes out hot and fast with lots to eat!! Favorite place to get pasta.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
